Waterton

We left Hungry Horse just before 9 AM, after a hot cooked breakfast consisting of blueberry pancakes, bacon and sausage. We love our Coleman! It was still raining and drizzly but we were hopeful that the weather would improve as we traveled. Our original plan was to head straight to Fort McLeod. But with a little input from dad, we included a couple of stops along the way - and boy are we glad we did!

After about an hour of travel via HWY 2 east we stopped in East Glacier, another home base for the park. We fueled up and then went to visit the old lodge located there. This lodge, built in 1913 is so beautiful! And it holds a special meaning as it was the beginning of the legend we now know as Chuck Perry. Evidently his mother was working as a maid in the lodge when she met her husband, who worked on the railroad. How romantic! Anyway, it was a neat old lodge and the boys enjoyed looking at the read half trees that hold up the great room. It was truly stunning.

We hopped back in our rigs and headed north on HWY 95, heading through St. Mary, Babb and across the Canadian border at Chief Joseph. The boys had hoped for actual stamps in their passports but the incredibly serious and intimidating border patrol did not give us an opportunity to do so. Oh well - maybe next time.

Our next stop was the north (Canadian) part of Glacier National Park - Waterton. I had no idea but perched atop a knoll at the base of several glacier packed granite peaks is the Prince of Wales hotel. Had we planned it better, we could have enjoyed high tea in this oddly placed old-style hotel. Waterton is a resort type town and while we did not have a lot of time to look around, we drove through the town and enjoyed what we saw. Steve and I have decided that Glacier Park deserves week of its own to enjoy - it is just too glorious for a meager 2 days!
We head north around 2 pm, via HWY 6 and made our way through a lush and rolling farm side community. One obviously popular crop was wind farming - we saw hundreds as we drove through the valley. Eventually we ended up in Pincher Creek, headed west on HWY 2 and ran smack into road construction. Thankfully we timed it just right and avoided what looked like 30 minute delays.
