We had a beautiful day, free of major problems. We left Snohomish at a little past 7 and arrived at the KOA in Missoula at just after 5 pm (mountain time). We had 2 bathroom breaks and one gas stop but otherwise we ate on the road and made it straight through.
The new Rainier trailor rode well, with little issues. Dad had a little issue when the wheels on the Vanagen he tows turned sideways and caused his truck to pull to the side. After a quick stop he was able to figure it out, turn the wheel and all was well.
In keeping with every single road trip I have ever taken through MT, there was extensive road construction. It was ridiculous. Several times I-90 was closed to a single lane, speeds restricted to 35 or maybe 45 mph (if we were lucky). And then we would drive miles on a half-closed road not seeing any real signs of work going on the road itself. Crazy! And the road was incredibly bad - very bumpy and lots of worn spots.
The boys did a great job in the truck. We only had to put in 1 movie and then listened to music, books on tape and read. They both took long naps and we only had one, "do we have to pull this truck over?" moment. Could not have expected a better day.
The KOA is pretty much in the middle of the commercial and new area of Missoula. We can walk to our choice of a Costco, Lowe's, TJ Maxx and Kracker Barrel. We are, however, cooking our own famous BBQ (no thanks, Dave down the road). The campsites are small and cramped and we got the only row without a single tree. But it is conveinient, clean and has a pool in case we need to cool off. All in all not too bad. I haven't been to Missoula in about 10 years and it had really grown.
We plan on having a relaxing evening and then tomorrow we will hit the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Museum & Visitor Center first thing. It happens to be within a mile of our campsite and on the way out. Then by early afternoon we should hit West Yellowstone.
