Not so Icy Straight Point
After a very rocky night at sea, we anchored in the harbor of Icy Straight Point, locate a few miles from the tribal town of Hoonah. The guys had a booked fishing excursion so they debarked early and set off with a guide who turned out to be a great one.
The weather was once again outstanding. In fact, we are setting records for the best weather with high 70s, sunshine and zero rain in most places.
This turned out to be the most pleasant surprise in terms of stops, but only because of the weather. The island is a small island with an old cannery that has been remade into retail shops. There is an impressive zip line and lots of fishing / whale watching. But otherwise not a lot going on.
After a leisurely breakfast the boys and I took a tender onto the island. We made it through the shops quickly so we just started walking along the each. Being the boys that they are, they immediately started skipping rocks and playing near the waters edge. I sat on a nearby bench and soaked up some sun while watching my boys enjoy the simpler things in life. No pricey excursion this day. We spent close to 4 hours just playing on the rocky beach. We saw jelly fish and several seals nearby, as well as whales out in the harbor. With the ship as a backdrop, the sunshine in my face and the laughs of 2 boys getting along, I was completely content.
When the guys got back they explained that the fishing trip took them up into the mountains to a small river. They donned waders and spent the next 2 hours fly fishing. Everyone got fish, and dad and Chuck (being a little more experienced than Steve) caught nearly 10 each. They said the fish we jumping all around you and you could literally walk on the fish.
After catching up with each other, we went back to the ship (departed at 2:30) and I sat on the balcony when I heard the distinct sound of a whale spouting. Just yards off the ship was a pod of blue whales surfacing and playing. Grady was with me and got to see them, as well, but Steve and Colby were not in the room at the time. They were soooooo impressive and beautiful.
It was our second formal night of the week but it was difficult to get the boys interested in dressing up again. They got a lot of attention the first formal night when they wore their hats and they were both tired. They did good at dinner, though.
One of the funniest moments happened during dinner when a photosphere tried to take chucks picture. He was seated next to Grady, who took matters into his own hands when he realized Chuck was not smiling. he reached over and used his fingers to prop chucks face into a smile. Which, of course, got loads of laughs from the entire table. Can't wait to see that photo!
We finished the night with the married show, where 3 audience couples embarrass themselves in front of a live audience. The boys insisted we apply but thankfully our number was not drawn. So we just enjoyed the show, which was funny.
