Journey to the center of South Dakota

We had the pleasure of visiting a wonderfully well done museum, called the Journey Museum. It featured the history of the South Dakota region, starting from geological formation to the natives to the pioneers. It was very well done, with several interactive displays. the kids particularly enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit, the hands-on (touch here) parts, and the settlers exhibit (including dress-up section). I enjoyed learning more about some of the colorful characters who helped form this harsh territory.

Rapid City is a very modern, upscale town that obviously is benefiting from the energy / shale (hydro-fracturing) boom. Dad says it is 10 x the city it was 20 years ago.

We drove up to Dino Park, which was actually built in 1936 and still stands. It is high on a hill overlooking the entire city and contains about 6 incredibly well loved old dinos. I am sure I climbed on these very dinos as a child and our boys did the same. It was a little cheesy but a lot of fun at the same time.

On the way home we stopped in Hill City for a drink at Bumpin Buffalo, a bar where Steve's parents had been and recommended. We enjoyed the bumpin buffalo brew and the scenery from atop the second story bar.

This evening was spent mostly doing laundry and chores, preparing for a move tomorrow. the boys did one more turn on the waterslide and the pool while I managed 3 loads of laundry. We are now sitting around the campfire, waiting for popcorn to pop. Yum!
