After 7 hours on the road (incident-free) we landed in St. Regis, MT. A dot on the map, St. Regis is likely most known for fishing and being close to Missoula. But it still feels like the country.
We are staying at the Nugget RV Park and it is really a nice campsite. We think it might have been a KOA at one time but is now independently owned and operated by a lovely family. Our sites are very clean, well maintained and the campsite has miles of trails that crawl through the hills. There is also a small camp of historic buildings that have been made into an old pioneer town. The boys loved exploring the trails and the old buildings. Colby tore through on his bike while Grady preferred to run along behind.
After a low-key meal with unexpected guests (bees) we loaded in the VW and headed down the street to get ourselves some authentic Montana Huckleberry milkshakes. Or at least some of the crew had shakes (rest of us took a pull or two but that was it). The c-store turned out to be quite the shopping center and mom and I found lots of fun treasures in this unexpected back woods store. There was free popcorn, a trout aquarium and cool arcade games. Completely unexpected here but a nice surprise. After a long day in the truck it was good to kick back and relax.
Steve is starting a fire behind me as I type this, mom & the boys are playing in the motorhome and dad is on his laptop. So far the only casualty had been dad not being able to open his awning, which he spent a while trying to fix but has not solved yet. It wouldn't be a trip if something didn't bust....
Tomorrow we head across MT to Hardin, where we will tour Little Big Horn and see where Custer is buried. The boys are enjoying the trip so far, with little squabbles. But it is still the first day.
